Today's Meeting
Hey all.... we met today at 2:00 in the Cyber Cafe and I am going to write down what we came up with so we can get going on all of these things! I will post our ideas so we can then expand on them and come prepared when we meet on wednesday at 10:30 P.M. in LeMans, Reignbeaux Lounge.
****We are also going to meet this Thursday After Class
1. I am going to familiarize myself with Second Life and we will show how this works, we were thinking that we would start out our presentation by showing an interaction between avatar's...
in order for the avatar to do anything, the user has to move them so we might think of something creative i can have my avatar do to show them (i have been playing around with it... pretty freaky, can go to Rome...anywhere really, even like sex shops hahaha) So in a way this is a tool for teens to explore sexual issues without even leaving their homes, kind of weird?
2. Katrina's Video
3. Magazine Learning Activity- for this activity we are going to have a variety of magazines and give 3-4 magazines to each group A-D and have them find articles or ads that they can apply to the activity.
4. Then we are going to show the Chris Rock video about Rap Music from (2:30-3:55) which will lead into a discussion of other songs with lyrics that anyone can come up with
-Alaine and Rebecca are going to put together a sheet with phrases from some songs that have lyrics we can analyze as a class that Lily can print out for us
-Then we will show the "Two White Girls Dance to Raunchy Rap Music After School" video from Youtube
-Next we will discuss/connect the If Women Ran Hip-Hop article to what was just done above
5. In the motherhood promo
BOOK READING:
-1. Creating Cutlure: we will make connections in our presentation to TV (in the mother hood, desperate housewives), Movies (Mean Girls, House Bunny, Legally Blonde), Music/Music Videos(Chris Rock about Rap Music, lyric analyzation), Print Media (magazine exercise), Literature and Arts (Gossip Girl Books),
2. (Tweens) Colliding Feminisms article
-young tweens want to be just like Britney Spears, or do they?
-we are going to act out several of the dialogues from the article which I will assign to you all sometime soon probably tomorrow...
3. Desperately Debating Housewives - Desperate Housewives, In the Motherhood
4. If Women Ran Hip Hop- see above
5. Pop Culture Gone Wild

ok i am sure that we can figure it out. that might make sense, for example, if i do magazines, which I was going to do before with the age I had, I could take a look at magazines targeted at all different age groups... which could really be neat.
I think what I will do is find the most bazar articles or parts of a magazine for kids, teens, adults, and then show that to the class as examples something ike that
Change of Direction....
After reading the chapter I'm not sure if dividing the age group of women up is really going to work. Seniors do not really apply to what they are talking about unless i stretch it to basically say they are enforcing ageism.
Might be easier we all just pick a category of Media and then describe and give examples of how women are affected by this type of media.
I thought we could focus on how non-diverse Media really is. what the "norm" is for all types of media as a way to connect them together.
Let me know what you think. I honestly don't think there is a way for my to do seniors so... Just let me know, I think we would have more flexibility with this anyway.

alrighty....
lets get it down here what types of media we have to choose from and whatnot so we are prepared for the meeting.
I guess mine would be magazines for my age group, and I have Redbook and Cosmo which a lot of times address those, as well as self...

alright,
why don't we find a night that is good for all of us to meet this week....i found the easiest way to do this is to ask for the times when you cannot meet... so from 5-10 monday-friday, what times can you all NOT meet.. that way we can meet at the time that is free to all...
just comment your unavailable times on this post!
and before we meet, its clear that we have the teen and childhood categories left for those who have not picked an area to research

Senior
Hey I would like to focus on the Senior aspect. Maybe on the pressure of trying to look young rather than celebrating your older self. For example, the obsession with wrinkles or skin-flaps. I can try to find research on plastic surgery statistics on eye-lid tucks and face-lifts and what have you.

Hey girls,
I will do the motherhood area.. like 25 and up. I think in that area I could focus on how the media makes us think we should be married and have kids.. but we cannot just have kids we need to be married to a MAN in a CHURCH before we should have kids or we are stigmatized.. and stuff like that...
I can get some data on how our government rewards this behavior through taxes and whatnot...

READINGS
also i suggest looking over the readings for that day. that could get us started also!!! we don't go til april so i mean we have time. also. the whole make up idea would be great, but there is also a whole other group presenting embodiment...so i dont know if we should FOCUS on that.
thats why i suggested the other areas. but i think the ages is a great idea bc we talk about agism.
Meet this weekend?
Can we meet sometime this saturday or sunday to "pinpoint" I agree. I think that it would be great if each of us has a age group.
1. (Childhood) (toys)
2. (pre-teen) (gossip girl.clique. books---an idea for that)
3. (Teen 13-22) (make-up)
4. (Adult (23-50) (motherhood ads)
5. Senior (51+) (not sure)
*** THESE ARE JUST IDEAS
and did something DIFFERENT for each one to cover points of pop culture. each of us can find something interesting for each one. I think we have 45 min to present. so...5 intro, 5 for each of us, then 5 min to wrap up and then discussion/questions.
I think this would be a GREAT way to break up work. what do you think?
let me know don't feel bad to shoot me down! ;) haha

Hola
I made it in. I would really like to fix our point of attack for this project. There have been a lot of great ideas but I think we really need to pinpoint something specific. Does anyone know how long we present for? If we present for the entire class then we can focus on a few aspects. I am intrigued by the whole make-up to make you look natural... I think that has a lot of aspects to it. Just my thoughts. Have a great weekend!
